Tracy Liu: Auki Labs' Innovative Force in Tech and Developer Relations

June 2, 2024

Meet Tracy Liu, the multifaceted creative technologist whose journey through tech has been marked by continuous evolution and cross-industry expertise.

Since joining Auki Labs in February 2023, Tracy has become an integral part of the team that drives innovation and developer relations forward. Tracy's background is unique, from healthcare roles to ocean exploration, making her story stand out from the usual career journey.

Alongside her remarkable technical achievements, Tracy's life beyond coding is defined by an insatiable appetite for continuous learning. Her pursuits range from wilderness first response to advanced open-water diving; she even possesses a commercial driver's license.

Tracy's expertise and diverse experiences propel Auki Labs’ innovations and enrich its developer community.

What have been some of the most significant technical milestones you've achieved since joining Auki Labs?

  • Trained a GPT-bot on knowledge about Auki Labs, the posemesh, and the values that underpin it all.
  • Helped bring the AI part of spatial AI to our Convergent apps in the form of AI generated tasks in space.
  • Made several tutorials about setting up Hagall servers and using the Posemesh SDK.
  • Set up the posemesh's loyalty and engagement platform.

How do you leverage your experience to foster a strong relationship between Auki Labs and the broader developer community?

Between Auki and my previous job, I’ve been involved with community engagement for over 12 years.

And though my role as part of the developer relations team is still new, I have quite a few ideas inspired by past experiences to empower and grow our developer community.

I’ve also been part of a handful of Web3 communities these past few years, some full of builders, so I’ve made some connections there and picked up a few things about community fostering that can be applied here.

Can you share how your cross-industry experience influences your approach to software engineering at Auki Labs?

Having worked on various tech endeavors throughout my career, my approach to software engineering is generally, “Sure, I’ll learn how to do that. Why not?”

None of the technical milestones listed above were things I knew how to do before joining Auki, but they were interesting and fun to learn.

How do you balance technical support responsibilities with community engagement and development?

So far, helping with community engagement hasn’t entailed spending excessive time hanging out on Discord; it only takes a few minutes at a time here and there between other tasks.

And since women are naturally more gifted than men at multitasking, jumping back and forth is easy. ;) Jokes aside, I’m grateful to our new team member Chris and moderators Kevin and Justin for recently stepping up on the community engagement front! Being able to count on them to handle most of it means I can jump in only when convenient.

The tech industry is constantly evolving. How do you stay ahead of the curve regarding skills and knowledge in your field?

It’s impossible, especially on the AI side of things! But no one else can keep up with everything, so I choose new things to learn about and try out.

I’m also fortunate to be part of a world-class team of engineers here at Auki; just listening to their updates and working with them levels up my skills and knowledge every day.

What unique challenges have you encountered while working on the posemesh project, and how have you addressed them?

Recently, Nils shared with the Developer Relations team that a prospective backer once passed on Auki because it’s notoriously difficult to build and maintain a successful SDK that achieves widespread adoption and has a thriving developer community around it. So that is the biggest challenge we face as a DevRel team.

Having only taken on this challenge a little over a month ago, I can’t say it’s been “addressed” already, but the plan is to put out a steady stream of content that’s not only helpful and inspiring for developers but also fun enough that social media algorithms will like it.

We’ll engage with creative agencies, event organizers, recognizable brands, and universities to create compelling shared AR experiences and educate.

We also planned some events and incentives for developers, so stay tuned!

How have your various certifications and passion for diverse interests, like diving and wilderness medicine, shaped your problem-solving abilities in tech?

Having diverse interests means I’m always chasing new and different experiences.

That has naturally boosted my creativity, and applying creativity with a certain amount of whimsy to problem-solving has always served me well.

It makes everything more fun and interesting, and I’m much better at doing fun and interesting tasks than I am at doing boring ones.
